Apple Inc Sets Up Its First Subsidiary in India for R&D, Apple Operations India

Apple Inc has recently set up its first subsidiary in India, named Apple Operations India. This move marks Apple's first direct presence in the country and is aimed at expanding its operational footprint beyond assembly and sales.

The subsidiary will focus on research, design, testing, and providing support to third-party manufacturers.

Apple Operations India has laid significant groundwork with capital work-in-progress worth Rs 38.2 crore and fixed assets of Rs 36.8 crore.

The entity will support third-party manufacturers and contractors by providing hardware, software, and other services.

According to regulatory filings, the entity, among other things, plans to procure engineering equipment, lease facilities, hire engineers for hardware development, and provide failure analysis services to Apple’s group companies.

The filing indicates Apple's strategic intent to deepen its operational presence in India beyond assembly and sales, potentially involving hardware design and testing in the country.

This development is part of Apple's strategy to diversify its production base beyond China and tap into India's skilled engineering talent.

The subsidiary may soon play a role in the development of Apple's new products, including hardware design and testing, which would be a first for India.

This move is a significant step for Apple as it strengthens its presence in one of the world's fastest-growing markets.

To recall, early last month it was reported that Apple is set to enhance its retail presence in India by opening four new stores by the end of 2025.
