PM Modi Keeps Close Watch on MPox as WHO Declares Global Health Emergency

As the World Health Organization (WHO) declares MPox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking proactive steps to manage the situation.

PM Modi is actively overseeing India's preparedness for MPox in response to the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 14th August 2024.

Dr. P.K. Mishra, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, convened a high-level meeting to review the country's preparedness.

The focus of the meeting was on the urgent need to ramp up surveillance across the nation. Authorities were instructed to ensure that testing laboratories are fully equipped and ready to respond at a moment's notice.

In addition to strengthening the detection mechanisms, an extensive awareness campaign is set to be launched. The campaign aims to educate the public on preventive health measures against the disease.

The situation is being closely monitored, and measures are being taken to enhance surveillance, raise awareness, and ensure readiness in case of any outbreak. As of now, there are no reported cases of Mpox in India, and the risk of a large outbreak remains low.

Mpox (monkeypox) is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It can lead to a painful rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. While most people fully recover, some may become seriously ill. The virus can spread through direct contact with infectious skin, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials. If you encounter mpox, follow precautions like staying home until scabs fall off and avoiding physical contact with others.
