Google Using AI to Add 110 New Languages to Google Translate

Google Translate has recently expanded its language support by adding 110 new languages using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models. This is the largest expansion in Google Translate's history. Here are some key points:

1. Language Variety: The new languages include Cantonese, NKo, and Tamazight, among others. These additions represent more than 614 million speakers, which is approximately 8% of the world's population.

2. African Languages: About a quarter of the new languages come from Africa, marking the largest expansion of African languages to date. Some examples include Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda, and Wolof.

3. Unique Languages: The expansion covers languages with varying levels of native speakers. For instance:
  • Afar: A tonal language spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.
  • Manx: The Celtic language of the Isle of Man, which almost went extinct but has seen a revival.
  • NKo: A standardized form of West African Manding languages.
  • Punjabi (Shahmukhi): The most spoken language in Pakistan, written in Perso-Arabic script.
  • Tamazight (Amazigh): A Berber language spoken across North Africa.
4. Revolutionary Model: Google used its PaLM 2 large language model (LLM) to achieve this expansion. PaLM 2 enables accurate translations across diverse languages.

In summary, Google Translate's AI-driven approach is breaking down language barriers and making communication more accessible worldwide.
