China is planning to introduce standard wireless charging for Electric Vehicles (EV) . Notably, on 6th of May China Electricity Council (CEC), along with China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), has introduced a set of national standards for electric vehicle wireless charging.

For wireless EV charging, CEC is deploying Massachusetts-based company WiTricity’s magnetic resonance technology. Founded in 2007, WiTricity is an MIT spin-off, focused on both consumer appliances as well as electric vehicle wireless charging.

WiTricity has been actively involved in the Chinese EV wireless charging standardization process through its work with China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), CATARC and the CEC. With a global IP portfolio of over 1400 issued and pending patents, WiTricity has declared twenty Chinese patents as "standards essential" to systems implementing the GB standard -- a Chinese national standards issued by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC).



WiTricity’s technology delivers the same power, efficiency and charge rate as conventional plug-in charging methods with no compromises. China-based WiTricity partner, Anjie Wireless demonstrated a fully wire-free autonomous experience.

China-based Zhejiang VIE Science & Technology Co., Ltd. subsidiary (VIE) and Anjie Wireless Technology (Suzhou) Co. Ltd. (Anjie) have licensed WiTricity’s technology and industry-leading designs which include all needed peripheral systems such as foreign object detection, position detection and communications. These companies develop and commercialize highly efficient EV wireless charging systems for sale to leading automaker brands in the China market.



Chinas CEC and CATARC have jointly developed 18 standards for wireless charging system for EV. Among these 18, 4 national standards are issued this time, and 4 national standards are in the process of preparation.

"WiTricity’s patented technology is foundational to the Chinese national standard (“GuoBiao” or GB standard) for wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging ratified and published by the China Electricity Council (CEC) on April 28, 2020 and announced on May 6, 2020. Standardization is critical to large-scale deployment of wireless charging for Electric Vehicles (EVs), both in China and around the world, allowing any equipped EV to use any standard wireless charger," China Electricity Council (CEC) said in a release.

As mentioned in the Wikipedia page, "WiTricity uses resonant inductive coupling technology principle for power transfer. As explained on the WiTricity website, that approach invokes "coupled resonators", which is created by tuning both the receiver and the transmitter independently to the same resonant frequency, in effect disregarding the effects of coupling when they are placed in close proximity.



As the exclusive licensee of this patented MIT intellectual property, WiTricity technology will be the medium that ties our existing electric grid to a broad range of mobile and wireless devices. The WiTricity website says that the company is actively developing the core technology and additional intellectual property that will take this wireless charging invention and apply it to electric vehicle wireless charging.
