In order to cement manifestation of Indian government's mission to go fully electric on roads by 2030, Town and Country Planning organisation under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has prepared a draft which proposes to amend building by-laws and make it compulsory for residential and commercial buildings and even parking lots, to have electric vehicle (EV) charging station, reported Economic Times (ET) citing government official.

Based on this draft proposal, governments shall amend their building by-laws and master plan regulations, which will be applicable to residential, institutional buildings, multi-level parking complexes, bus terminals and service stations.

And, if the proposal make it to live implementation then there will be an extra load of electricity consumption by these buildings and premises thus the proposal also includes increasing electricity load for all buildings.

The ET report further said that the proposal also includes 24x7 charging infrastructure facility for EVs in residential buildings. It also includes setting up charging bays at 20 per cent capacity of all EVs, on-spot metering and payment services in commercial as well as residential building.

The report cited a government official, saying, "The government is considering amendments to Urban and Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation Guidelines, 2015 and Model Building By-Laws, 2016 to accommodate promotion of electric vehicles in infrastructure planning and power distribution services norms."

For laymen, Home or Work based charging stations requires some electric vehicles to have onboard converters that can plug into a standard electrical outlet or a high-capacity appliance outlet. Others either require or can use a charging station that provides electrical conversion, monitoring, or safety functionality.

The electric vehicles in residential buildings are usually connected to the main power grid via household socket-outlets. Charging is done via a single-phase or three-phase network and installation of an earthing cable, a circuit breaker to protect against overload and an earth leakage protection. A protection device is built into the cable.

Recently, Switzerland-based multinational corporation ABB had announced soon put up production facilities in India to manufacture EV chargers locally in India, by next year.

It may also be recalled that in last month, Government of India-owned, NTPC Limited, had started its 1st Electric EV charging station in Simhadri, Vishakhapatnam in line with the government's plan to switch to clean mobility.

Besides, Gail (India) Limited, is also keen to estup EV charging station across India and had recently sought its shareholders approval to set up battery charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) as it looks to diversify its portfolio beyond gas and petrochemicals.
