The US Embassy has launched the Nexus Startup Hub at the American Center in Delhi, aiming to support a dynamic ecosystem for innovative Indian startups through the sharing of American best business practices in entrepreneurship and incubation, reported Business Standard.

With its programmes, the startup hub will support India's female entrepreneurs in setting up businesses and get access to funding.

"The first is a programme that provides training, mentoring and networking opportunities specifically to female entrepreneurs throughout India," the US Embassy said in a statement.

"This women-focused programme is designed to support and empower women with entrepreneurial interests who are currently studying at India's universities to overcome barriers and become future leaders in India's startup sector," it added.

Run by the US embassy in partnership with IC-squared Institute at the University of Texas-Austin, the Nexus start-up hub, since March 2017, has helped 20 Indian start-ups get training from top commercialisation across the globe as well as helped them get access to private and public fund managers specialising in supporting startups.

Nexus' advisory board members include big names such as -- American Chamber of Commerce, the Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), the Indian School of Business (ISB), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Indian Angels Network (IAN).

Talking about female entrepreneurship in India, it was reported last month that 20% of every 1000 MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) in India are women-owned. Although, in a separate 2016 report on Indian startup ecosystem, presented by Nasscom along with Zinnov, it was revealed that only 9% of Indian founders or co-founders are women.

Notably, India’s ranking in women entrepreneurship has always been low so much so that it has been named in worst countries for women entrepreneurs despite of the fact revealed by a study that women entrepreneurs are better risk takers and enjoy work more than men.

Recently, in last month, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has launched ‘Women Startup Programme’ with an aim to train 12000 aspiring women entrepreneurs in India through its 5-week “Do Your Venture” Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). The programme haa began in January- March and is totally free of cost.
