Bengaluru is called India's IT capital for a reason. The city, which boosts of being the nation's leading information technology (IT) exporter, will soon also boost of having IoT enabled roads. Yes, you read that right.
Being developed under PM Modi's pet project, Smart Cities Mission, at least seven km of roads in Bengaluru's central business district area will be developed as 'Smart SURE' roads. These roads will have IoT enabled solutions for citizens and making driving on Indian roads an experience rather than an act of pain.
According to the information available, the high streets nearby Vidhana Soudha including MG Road, Brigade Road and Commercial Street have been decided to be included in the plan as of now. Depending on the success of the project, it can be expected to be increased in the near future.
Not only will the 'Smart SURE' roads come with basic wi-fi connectivity, they will also feature 420 sensor-based smart dustbins, 50 designated vending kiosks, 50 smart card-enabled public bicycle sharing points, 35 e-toilets and 30 e-rickshaw stands. All of these will be connected to 1,250 smart telecom towers that will double up as street light poles.
This project is an integral part of a Rs 2,090-crore plan to turn Bengaluru into a smart city. The Silicon Valley of India made the cut into the Smart Cities Mission last month after two previous failed attempts.
According to an official closely associated with the Smart Sure roads project, the roads being developed will essentially be Tender SURE roads with a slight but significant touch of technology. About 51.6 km of roads in the core area of the city has been decided to be redeveloped as per Tender SURE guidelines.
For Bengaluru's Smart City Project, the authorities have decided that a lion share of amount, which is Rs 1,166 crore of the total Rs 2,090-crore designated to the project, will be invested in 21.8 sqkm of the city's core area comprising the historic Pete and Cantonment with old markets and commercial hubs of MG Road, Brigade Road, Chickpet, Avenue road and Commercial Street under Area-Based Development (ABD).
Other projects that will be included under smart city ABD is the redevelopment of the Russell Market, KR Market and Malleswaram market, Ulsoor and Sankey lakes, Shivajinagar and Majestic bus depots, Swathanthra Palya slum, Cubbon Park and KC General Hospital.
Of the Rs 2,090 crore capital expenditure required for the Bengaluru Smart City project, Rs 500 crore each is being contributed by State and Central government. The city's civic body is confident of getting the rest of the anount from public-private partnership, BMRCL and BMTC among many other sources.
