Shocking right? Well, this is what Mumbai-born US scientist Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai claims. He says that he and not Ray Tomlinson is actually the true inventor of the email. Dr. Ayyadurai is a US entrepreneur who has secured four degrees from MIT which include a Ph.D.

Dr Ayyadurai claims he was all of 14, when as a research fellow at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), located in Newark, New Jersey, he invented email in 1978.

He goes on to say that Ray Tomlinson was the inventor of text messaging and not the email as he is believed to be. The email has many more features like inbox, outbox drafts, trash, attachment and much more in comparison to what Ray worked on which was just texting between computers. Ray just invented text messaging between computers in around 1971 which is not what we know of email now.

According to him, he created the email at the age of 14 while he was working as a research fellow at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. While studying there one his assignments was to create a software that was similar to the interoffice mail system and that is how he ended up creating the email. He named his software email and also got copyrights for it. He blames this on discrimination against him based on ethnicity and his origin. He believes it is because of his color that no one is ready to give him the recognition and credit that is rightfully his. Apparently he has also had to face a lot of personal and racist attacks and he is blaming them on Tomlinson's employer.

The others believe that Ray Tomlinson has been working on electronic communication for a very long time, even before Ayyaduri came along and that Ayyaduri's invention is just a software that was used just on the campus. What they story on this end is that Ray was working on a research project on the topic Arpanet for a company, where they had already come up with a messaging system for just one computer. Ray worked on this technology and took it one step further where he developed a program that would allow messages to be sent to computers and that required him to use the "@" and thus, he invented the email.

There are two sides to this story with both sides standing firmly for what they believe in. Though the world knows Ray Tomlinson as the inventor of the email, we have Dr. Ayyadurai claiming rights over this invention. He said in a tweet that he does not wish to be vindictive but just wants the truth out there.
