Meet SafeMate, A GPS-Based Personal Safety Device By MapmyIndia

Safety is first on the priority list of many, whether men or women, while going out nowadays. Whether it's broad day light or the silent darkness at night, the alarming rate at which crimes like rape, assaults are increasing have turned the cities into fearful places where the best way to stay safe is lock yourself up in your houses and not venture out at all. While it seems like the most safe option but it is surely not a sane one for many of us who are either working or studying in order to earn our daily bread. Assuring the safety of these hard workers when they're away from their safety nests, their homes, is a safety device called SafeMate.

SafeMate is a dedicated personal safety device developed by Delhi-based MapmyIndia, a provider of digital maps, GPS navigation, and tracking. This personal safety device device can be purchased exclusively from Flipkart at Rs. 6,990.

The matchbox-sized SafeMate weighs just 50 grams in weight and can fit into a school bag, purse, or pocket very easily. The wonder safety device makes use of its built-in GPS and Internet connectivity to securely transmit live locations to a mobile phone and desktop. It also has an SOS button that can be pressed in case of an emergency. Pressing the SOS button will send email and SMS alerts to the emergency contacts designated by the person.

On purchase, the device will come loaded with with Rs. 3,600 worth of SIM card connectivity charges and subscription fees. This service can then be subsequently renewed for Rs. 300 on a monthly basis, and has a separate SMS package for top ups, priced between a menial Rs. 250 to 500.

"The alarming increase in crime women and children in India spurred us into thinking about how we could use our sophisticated technology to provide safety to individuals. We wanted to keep things simple so that the technology can be used in the most stressful situation. The result is SafeMate," said Rashmi Verma, Director and Co-Founder, MapmyIndia, in a statement.

Google Launches Brotli, A New Open Source Compression Algo To Speed Up The Internet

brotli

With advancements happening at the blink of an eye, the online world is becoming even more demanding day by day. These advancements has also thrown open the need for compression and this demand is increasing exponentially day after day. For those well versed with the technology and online world, must be well aware of the Pied Piper compression algorithm. And, now there's a new and better compression algorithm in town.

Developed by the technology giant, Google, Brotli is an open source compression algorithm. It is an entirely new data format that offers its users 20-26 percent better compression than Zopfli, an another compression algorithm from Google.

Google has developed both its compression algorithm, Brotli and Zopfli, by keeping the Internet in mind and with an aim of making the web pages load faster. Brotli is open-sourced under the Apache License.

Brotli is a lossless compressed data format that uses a combination of Huffman coding and LZ77 algorithm to compress data. Its efficiency is at par with the best currently available general purpose compression methods.

And if you were wondering, Google has adopted a naming convention for its compression algorithms just like it has with Android. As the company explains in a blog post, "Brötli means ‘small bread’ in Swiss German"; Zopfli was also named after a Swiss bakery product.

Compression is considered better than bzip2 and LZMA and according to Google, Brotli is almost as fast and good as zlib's Deflate implementation.

This Indian Gaming Startup Has Reinvented The Jigsaw Puzzle and Now Crowdfunding For Global Expansion

madrat

In this digital age, the digital bug bites children at such a young age that children of even 2-4 prefer grabbing the Smartphones of their parents in order to play their favourite games online. The current generation is so hooked up on playing their games on their Smartphones, laptops and gaming consoles etc. that playing an offline games seems highly boring and uninteresting to them. Understanding this situation at hand and working towards bettering of it, is a Bangalore based startup called MadRat Games.

MadRat Games is one of those handful of offline gaming firms in India which builds and retails educational games. The firm is currently in the news for having launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to support the overseas expansion plans of Madzzle, its new series, which is a reinvention of the age old jigsaw puzzles.

The company is currently going great guns as they were successful in raising $1 million earlier this year from investors including Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, the two co-founders of Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart.

Bermuda Triangle, a zero-gap jigsaw puzzle, is among the five Madzzle games that is currently taking the country by storm. Jigsaw puzzles, which were once a hit among children are no longer preferred by them because of their lack of replay factor. Madzzle puzzles fixes this glitch as they lend themselves to further games once the jigsaw has been completed. Each Madzzle puzzle kit comes packed with accessories such as decoders, glow-in-the-dark objects and magnifying glasses.

MadRat Games has been founded by the couple, Rajat Dhariwal and Madhumita Halder. Both are alumni of the same institute, IIT, Mumbai. They both quit their high paying jobs after being intrigued by the purpose-of-life question and started teaching at the well-known Rishi Valley School, outside Bangalore. That's when they decided to bring activity and play into teaching and started MadRat Games.

MadRat began its first official journey in 2010 with a help of 35,00,00 rupees from Dhariwal’s father and since then there has been no looking back. Their first game, Aksharit, which is the world’s first Hindi-language Scrabble was a big hit and was sold by the thousands to government schools and, later, as a mobile game, got bundled with mobile phones from device maker, Nokia. The startup was then funded by Blume Ventures and First Light Ventures and successfully retailed over 3 lakh games.

After much deliberation and thinking, they came upon jigsaws as a category because they thought there was a certain calmness and concentration built into them. All this led to the amazing Madzzle, the zero-gap, roll-up puzzle that converted into a board game with sunken ships underwater scenes and crashed plans that extended into treasure hunts.

MadRat Games is currently working on a project that involves incorporating technology – but without screens – by creating a wearable platform. The platform which is currently at prototype stage will be at the at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016.

Coming Soon: India's Own Operating System Called BOSS, To Replace Microsoft Windows

boss_operating_system

If all goes well, Indians might just soon be able to work on an operating system 'made in India'. Yes, after Microsoft Windows, iOS and all other major operating systems available in the market, it is now time to make way for the BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions).

The BOSS can been seen as another step taken by the Indian government towards digitization of India under its pet project, 'Make in India'.

The operating system's software package is being described as "India's own PC operating system” and "the most meaningful product to come out of the Indian software industry in decades - and a work that a government department has done”.

BOSS is GNU/Linux distribution developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) derived from Debian for enhancing the use of Free/ Open Source Software throughout India. It comes with Linux Foundation certification for compliance with the Linux Standard Basestandard.

First developed by National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software in the year 2007, the software is now being developed along with DRDO, Gujarat Technical University and a few private computer software enthusiasts have also been involved.

The new Indian Operating system will provide power packed security features to its customers in order to protect them from the uncountable unfair deeds of hackers nowadays. The OS will also come with a bulk file converter and a virtual keyboard on the display screen itself in order to ensure speedy and safe transfer of data.

Being an Indian based Operating System, the BOSS will be able to understand 18 languages in total including Indian regional languages such as Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati Malayalam and Bengali to name a few.

Moreover, India (government) can also ask all the banks in the country to switch OS curently used in ATMs, which is Microsoft Windows, to BOSS. Evenmore, last year, state of Tamil Nadu has even issued an order to all state-run banks to consider installing BOSS as one of the mandatory operating system. The huge investment cost involved in purchasing closed source software (such as Windows 7 etc.) may be avoided, which in turn translates into huge savings for the government. Developer of BOSS operating system says that its is not vulnerable as like Microsoft Windows.

India being one of the fastest growing economies in the world was in a desperate need of an Operating System of its own in order to protect itself from the frequent hacking attempts being made by professional Chinese Indian hackers. Also, the Wikileaks reports have brought back to light the vulnerabilities of the cyberspace most countries. The report revealed that currently India was the most scrutinized country by the United States intelligence agencies. In times like these, the BOSS operating system was a much needed invention.

The BOSS can be currently downloaded from its official website www.bosslinux.in absolutely free of cost.

This Pocket Device Tells You What's In Food, Drink or Pills

scio_detector

All the technological advancements taking place in the 21st century are having both, a positive and negative impact on the humankind. While on the one hand, they're making our lives easier, on the other hand, they're screwing the quality of food that we take in. Adulterated foods has become such a common phenomenon that people are now trying their level best to either eat everything organic or make sure that everything that they put in their mouth has been grown in their own personal gardens.

In order to ensure the quality of the food we take in our day to day lives, an Israeli based start-up Consumer Physics has launched a pocket device called SCio which can analyse the composition of food, drink and medication we consume, anywhere at anytime.

The SCiO tool works by sending data on the chemical makeup of a particular substance to the user's smartphone, where a variety of applications need to be installed in order to present the final results.

According to Dror Sharon, co-founder of the firm based in Hod Hasharon, near Tel Aviv, the tool is "the first molecular sensor that fits in the palm of your hand."

Not only adulteration, the tool will also allow users to see the calories present in a particular food or drink or tell them if that jacket is really leather.

The tool which is already in the markets doesn't require any physical contact with the substance that needs to be tested because it makes use of a beam of light in what is known as Near Infrared Spectroscopy.

scio

Each molecule present in the substance to be tested interacts with light to create a unique optical signature. This particular technique can reveal an object's chemical properties, such as moisture, fat or sugar content.

Using the system, one can for example determine how ripe the tomato, you just bought from the supermarket, is.

Consumer Physics is banking on the data gathered by its users to expand its information bank.

The website reads, "The bigger our community gets, the more data SCiO will have about different materials and this goes right back to our community of users."

This wonderful product was first launched on Kickstarter, a crowdfunding site. It received a wonderful response within a short time of its launch and has received 13,000 customers for the gadget at $250 dollars (220 euros) apiece so far. The first batch of gadgets will be out for delivery from December 2015.

The prototype of the gadget has been already been made but is being kept under guards as the makers strongly believe that within a few years the giants of the industry will realise the true potential of the product and come to see the gadget as an indispensable thing.

Wearable Tech Meets Indian Tradition - Bindis (Dots) To Fight Iodine Deficiency Among Indian Women

[caption id="attachment_101581" align="aligncenter" width="698"]By simply adding iodine to a bindi adhesive, rural Indian women are able to fight iodine deficiency. By simply adding iodine to a bindi adhesive, rural Indian women are able to fight iodine deficiency.[/caption]

It's a famous saying that a thing as small as an ant is enough to make the life of an elephant miserable. Same thing can be applied to the invention that we're talking about. Who could have thought that a bindi as small as dot could cure iodine deficiency and save lives.

Grey for Good, Which is the philanthropic arm of the agency Grey Advertising, is currently working on a project called the Life Saving Dot. Under the above mentioned project, they're testing bindis that doubles up as an easy and inexpensive way to get more iodine through skin absorption on women in rural parts of the west Indian state of Maharashtra.

Iodine deficiency is a very serious health hazard prevalent in India. Iodine is mostly associated with salt intake and its deficiency can cause diseases like goitre, hyperthyroidism, stunted growth or intellectual disabilities - which are all preventable diseases.

Since the main source of Iodine is salt, people perceive that it is very easy to get. But, unfortunately, that isn't the case with most of the population. Remote mountainous regions usually have soil that is iodine-poor, and the consumption of seafood, which is also one of the main sources of Iodine, isn't favoured in some societies.

The idea of Iodine bindis first came to came to Ali Shabaz, chief creative officer of Grey Singapore, when he was thinking about new ways and uses for wearable technology. In order to make the project Life Saving Dot possible, Grey for Good has teamed up with an NGO Neelvasant and Talwar, a bindi distributor. Together the team has created a standard scarlet bindi but with an Iodine twist. Each of the bindi’s adhesive is covered with 150-200 micrograms of iodine.

dots iodine India

A woman wearing the iodine bindi throughout the day absorbs on an average 12% of her daily requirement of iodine, which is a substantial improvement from before.

To those thinking that bindis will be a little harsh on the pockets of the ladies, don't worry. Since the bindi use the same technology and design as nicotine patches, it’s cheap and production costs are also minimal.

So, all those women with Iodine deficiency out there, we know it's a struggle to keep a tab on your health with all the juggling you have to do at work and in home. Let Life Saving Dot save you from Iodine deficiency at least.

VC Funding In Agri-Tech Startup Ramping Up In India

agriculture startups

Agriculture has always been the backbone of India. It has been the primary occupation of almost 80 percent of Indians since long. The Indian startup industry understood this dependency of the estate on the field very well and came up with a lot of ventures in order to cash on this dependency. And, now these agri based start-up firms have caught the fancy of the Venture Capital funds.

According to Omnivore Partners, a venture capital firm focused on agriculture and food-tech, "Venture capital funding in agri start-up firms is picking up in India and is expected to increase in the coming years." It associates this increase in VC funding to the lack of institutional funding through banks and Non- Banking Financial Company (NBFC). Apparently, this lack of institutional funding has prompted the entrepreneurs of these startups to go for venture capital even at a high cost.

Speaking to the PTI on the occasion of a CII event, Jinesh Shah, a Founding Partner at the Mumbai-based Omnivore Parters said, "There has been increase in VC funds flowing in start-up companies operating in the field of agriculture. We have made investment in atleast 11 firms including weather forecasting company Skymet."

The 11 companies in which the investments have been made cater to precision farming, farm mechanisation, sustainable farming, and innovative foods.

"We are currently investing between Rs 5,00,000 and Rs 30,000,000 in agri-start up companies, which we plan to scale up to Rs 60,00,000 in the coming years," added Shah.

However, the number of agri based startups is much lower when compared to the number of startups in the technology and e-commerce sector. The main reason for this huge disparity in the numbers is because there are too many problems in the entire value chain of agriculture.

odysse_camera_rig

Google, the software and search engine giant, is famous for providing the world with something new and something innovative with its every invention. Keeping in line with its this record Google launched Jump, a platform for VR video, back at Google developer conference in May this year. Along with the Jump came a slightly different camera rig called Odyssey.

GoPro Odyssey, ready for Jump platform, uses HERO4 camera modules and allows all 16 cameras to act as one. It makes camera syncing easy, and includes features like shared settings and frame-level synchronization. Google's Jump platform assembles these 360 videos that allows one to experience a scene in every direction.

Co-designed with GoPro, Odyssey was yesterday opened to prospective content creators to put their name down to get early access to the hardware. This particular move of the company is specifically aimed at professional partners.

A person will have to shed an eye-watering amount of $15,000 to get board on this particular Odyssey. This staggering amount of money will get you 16 GoPros for starters (that accounts for $8,000 of the Odyssey's cost at the camera's $500 retail price). Further, the package includes memory cards, cables, a pelican case, connectivity mounts for each camera and the cylindrical Odyssey rig itself. Once all of this is combined, the rig has the potential to shoot 2.7K video in 4:3 aspect ratio. The main selling point of course is the 360-degree/3D experience. Google with GoPro is positive that with Odyssey they can raise the standard in terms of immersive video quality.

In addition to all the hardware mentioned above, the Jump platform also comes with a video "assembler". The assembler is responsible for stitching all the files together to create one seamless globe, and then, there's of course a player on YouTube which will include support for viewing via Cardboard in stereoscopic/3D, or regular "flat" viewing via desktop or the YouTube app.

Click around on the video here. The view rotates allowing for unprecedented control. Use AWSD keys to rotate the video or click and drag if on mobile.

According to GoPro's spec-sheet, all the 16 cameras combined provide an output at 2K x 2K over/under (rather than side-by-side) panoramic MPEG4 video at 150Mbit/s or 8K x 8K at 600Mbit per second.

So, if you're based in based in U.S., UK, Canada, the EU, Japan, or Brazil, you can start your journey on this particular odyssey by applying here.

Turn Any TV Into A Giant Touch-Screen Tablet With This $130 Gadget

touchjet_wave

Bigger is always better. And, when it comes to the world of touchscreen, this particular saying is very much, 100 percent true. The way in which we interact with screens has changed dramatically over the past few years. Nowadays, not even an hour passes that we haven't laid our hands on a touchscreen. Whether it's a smartphone, tablet or a laptop, everything now comes with a touchscreen which gives the user an enchanting experience.

The only day to day electronic viewing device which hadn't been bit by the touchscreen buzz yet was our television but that is not the case anymore. Touchjet WAVE is the name of the device making our dream of a touchscreen TV come true. Having already received a funding of over $400,000, which is something 400% above the team’s original $100,000 goal, the project has already hit all the right notes with the people.

The WAVE can mount on any TV up to 80 inches with an HDMI port, has the potential to run any Android application that you want it to and can also connect to Wi-Fi for streaming video as well as downloading new apps. Best of all, this wonder device will only cost you $129 if you pledge right now.

According to WAVE's Indiegogo page, it "uses bleeding edge infrared technology to track finger movements and taps across the screen. WAVE's Light Processing Unit translates these infrared inputs into gestures and taps that the Android system can understand.”

If you're too tired to walk up to your television and switch it on, don't worry at all and allot that task to WAVE. The WAVE can be controlled from your smartphone or tablet with the mobile companion app. In order to give everyone a larger and clearer view of recent trip's pictures and videos, you can also share the images, videos and documents from your mobile device to the WAVE.

The current plan of the Touchjet team is to end the campaign sometime next month, test the device throughout the year and then start shipping the device to backers as early as in March 2016. The global launch of the product is expected to take place sometime in April 2016.

A similar device launched by same company -TouchJet, called TouchPico which is capable of turning any flat screen or even a wall into an interactive screen.

This Unique Startup Offers Shipping Address For E-Shoppers To Avoid Failed Deliveries

doorguy

Is your best friend's wedding scheduled for next month and you have just discovered the perfect lehanga online but are skeptical about ordering it because you don't know if it would be delivered on time and even if it's delivered on time you won't be at home to receive the package in person and since it is a costly purchase and you don't want to end up losing it in transit? Is this the dilemma that you face every time you order something online? Well, not anymore, because with Doorguy's services at your disposal, you won't have to worry about the delivery of your online goods ever again.

Doorguy is a simple package delivery scheduling system which allows customers to get their online purchases delivered to their door at the time they choose.

The Gurgaon based startup is essentially a package delivery scheduling service that allows users to get their online purchases (or anything else) delivered to their doorstep until midnight. One can choose the day and even the time that they want the packages to be delivered, and they will never-ever again miss another delivery, or need to lug heavy boxes home back from work.

The Startup's aim is to streamline the delivery process so that users can receive their packages stress-free. The process to avail Doorguy's services is really simple. When you create an account with Doorguy, you’ll receive a unique shipping address at Doorguy's depot. So, the next time you shop online, you are required to enter this address as your own. Whenever they receive your package, they notify you about the same and let you schedule a delivery time for that same day or any day in the future. They will come straight away to your door and hand-deliver your package to you for just an extra cost of Rs.19/package.

In odd circumstances, for example, if user is out of town to recieve package, Doorguy can hold the packages for 15 days at no extra cost. After 15 days, user will charge Rs.10/day per package.

The service is very useful for busy city dwelling professionals, people who work late in office, people living alone or college students. As most of the time these kind of people are not available at their residences to recieve packages purchased online Doorguy comes handy for them.

This wonderful idea of starting a package delivery service came to Anshul Garg, an IIT Roorkee graduate. DoorGuy is currently available only in Gurgaon but they have plans of expanding to NCR very soon.

The startup claims to be the only company/service that provides package delivery at customer's schedule (including date and even time).

5 Recommendations to Secure the Internet of Things

securing iot

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology is rising like never before. It has spread in our lives at such a pace like fire in a wild jungle. But, with all the advantages that we're currently experiencing, we're somewhere choosing to ignore the big problems posed by the IoT on our face. Here, we try to present 5 recommendations that will help us enjoy the IoT minus all the risks.

1) There's a need to manage security at every level of IoT -

During a panel discussion at the TIE Startup Con panel in May this year, Deepak Taneja, former RSA CTO, described the IoT security scare as a "time bomb." According to him, technology is nowadays advancing at a lightning speed and IoT with its connected sensors and gadgets is making things a lot more difficult.

As the world becomes more and more connected with each passing day, there's an urgent need to incorporate identity in order to secure the object, its access, and every transaction. The password security system has now become a passé and completely obsolete technology and now there's a need for a solution that's more open, compatible and trustworthy.

2) Protection of the identity of Users and Objects -

Gates, doors, fences and firewalls are no longer a trustable guard for our security. The new perimeter in this case is our identity. We need to secure our this identity in order to keep the attackers from accessing our home security cameras, stealing our photo collections, medical records and bank statements etc. There's a need to embed Identity protection into the base platform on which our next-generation technology is being built, so that we can interact with the connected world with all our trust and confidence.

3) Password Usage should be eliminated -

Attackers usually make use of weak passwords, insecure password recovery mechanisms, poorly protected credentials or lack of granular access control in order to access a particular interface. In order to secure the IoT, there's a need of developing a technology that is highly compatible with all the devices, especially considering the fact that some of the existing "dumb" devices can be made highly "intelligent," creating a mix of new and old machines that run on disparate systems and technologies that must communicate.

4) Need to Implement Multifactor Authentication -

According to the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP), a worldwide not-for-profit charitable organization focused on improving the security of software, authentication is not a sufficient tool when weak passwords are used or are poorly protected. However, insufficient authentication is a common thing because organizations often assume that their interfaces will only be exposed to users on internal networks and not to external users on other networks.

Implementing multifactor authentication is the solution to this problem. It can significantly strengthen the authentication process because it aims to remove the password. This further ends up eliminating many pervasive methods that attackers are commonly and successfully known to execute.

5) Focus on protecting the identities and not gateways -

Digital certificates are now the proven means of securing an identity. Traditionally, an expensive and complex system, certificates are nowadays available from many vendors that make them available to organizations more cost-effectively via the cloud. A cloud-based service has the potential to deliver an Internet-based certificate, a government-generated certificate or a company-owned certificate, into any form of credential that will protect an identity based on whatever standard has been adopted by the user.

Using the same technology, an identity can be used across various different environments. The significant advantage of this method is that it helps in the removal of the counterfeiting of goods, proliferation of passwords, and duplication of identities. A digital certificate is important because it cannot be copied, altered, or transplanted from a credential. In order to avoid being the next victim of the IoT security hazard, we recommend you to embrace multifactor authentication.

10 Steps to Starting A Startup While Keeping Your Full-Time Job

startup_full_time_job

Opening a business of our own and being our own bosses is on the to-do list of many. But, many of us don't have the luxury to bet all that we have and start on our startup dream journey. In order to keep the hopes of all those people who can't afford to keep their current job at risk in order to fulfil their life long dream, www.indianweb2.com brings to you a list of ten things that you can consider for starting your own business while keeping your full-time job.

1) Passion -

Before taking the final plunge and investing your hard earned money in your venture, ask yourself how badly do you want this to be successful. Starting a business will not be an easy task. While some days might be a cakewalk, there would surely some days under the sun. So, you need to be ready for any challenge that might come your way. Further, try to sort your life and start prioritising things in your life. The more free time you will have, the more you will be able to concentrate on your startup.

2) Take a note of your strong and weak points -

Since it's your business and you will be the one calling the shots, you should be well aware of the tasks that you're strong at and the tasks you would be needing external help. Don't have ego and start thinking that you can do it all, as this can have huge repercussions on your startup.

3) Think about your idea well -

There are thousands of startups launched every month but only a handful of them survive after the initial 3-4 months. The main reason for this is the lack of market need for the products or services being offered by these startups. Therefore, before launching the startup and investing your life time savings it, validate your idea by running it through a sample of potential customers and asking for their honest feedback.

4) Know your USP -

Define the unique thing that distinguishes your startup from the sea of other such firms already present in the market. Your firm needs to have something unique in order to retain itself in the highly competitive market. It can be your product offering, customer service or cost structure etc.

5) Define your goals -

Until and unless you dream about something, you won't achieve it. Hence, you should always have realistic goals set for your startup. For example, after six months, you want it to be able to achieve this much and within an year, you want it to be among the top 10 startups in its category etc. Such goals keep the momentum going and provide a zeal to keep working hard.

6) Roadmap to success -

Once you have set your goals or the destination where you want to reach, you should also figure out a way to reach there. Further, you should always have your backup plan ready in time of a crisis. Problem solving is one thing that you should become really good at.

7) Don't be afraid to outsource -

Once you have decided upon your goals and the roadmap you're going to take to achieve them, start looking out for things which aren't your forte and would require external expert help. Outsource as many things you can as you of course want the best for your startup.

8) Feedback -

Always ask for honest feedback from people other than your family and friends. After all, the product or service that you're offering is ultimately meant to be used by the public. Hence, a whole-hearted acceptance of the product or service is very important.

9) Keep the lines between your work and personal project well defined -

Make sure that you don't use any type of resources, whether hardware or software, of the organisation that you're currently working at for your own personal project because it can get you into deep legal troubles. Also, don't work on your personal project during company time as it can be termed highly unprofessional if you're caught.

10) Be fully prepared before quitting your job -

Research well and be fully sure about the fate of your startup before you walk up to your boss and hand him/her that resignation letter. If possible, hold on to your current job till the time your startup flags off completely and starts making money as till that time you would require some money to sustain on.

IIT-Madras Alumnus Founded Zenify Aims To Disrupt Managed Property Rental Market In India

zenify

The Indian real estate market is currently at its all time prime. This has made it a highly favourable market to rent rather than invest for the salaried service class people. Seeing this increase in demand, a new rental management company called Zenify.in has entered the market.

While big players like 99acres, MagicBricks.com along with Housing are already tapping real estate deals online, a managed house rental service in India remains untapped.

The Bangalore-based startup aims to provide a seamless rental experience to both, owners and tenants. They wish to do this by making optimum use of technology.

The current rental scenario is very bad in the country, posing a lot of problems for rental and tenant seekers. The company is working hard towards redefining this way in which property rentals are managed in India. With a unique online and offline offering, it is the only company in the country providing assured rentals and in depth property management services. From finding a tenant to managing a property to providing assured rentals, Zenify takes care of everything.

[caption id="attachment_101351" align="aligncenter" width="700"](L-R) Sudarshan, Ankur, Kailash - Co-Founders, Zenify.in (L-R) Sudarshan, Ankur, Kailash - Co-Founders, Zenify.in[/caption]

The company is the fruit of hard labour of three IIT-Madras graduates, Sudarshan Purohit, Ankur Agarwal and Kailash Rathi. Zenify's birth has an interesting story behind it. Immediately after college, the trio were comfortably settled in high paying jobs. But, as migrants to the city, they faced a hard time while trying to find a place on rent. This scratched their urge to start something of their own and solve the problem once it for all. And, that's how Zenify came into existence.

The company is very different from the sea of such companies available in the market. Zenify isn't like a typical listing platform. Unlike them, once a property is registered with the company, the owner gets an assured rental for the agreed time period between the tenant and the owner. If due to some reason the tenant decides to discontinue the agreement, Zenify will still continue to pay the rent even when the flat is vacant. The company also tackles all the maintenance related responsibilities and tenant complaints that arise during the agreed period.

This innovative company has also captured the interest of various investors. Zenify has received angel funding from Atul Jalan and Gana Yantrika Systems. Atul Jalan is the CEO and Founder of Manthan systems, which is the fourth successful venture of the serial entrepreneur. On the other hand, Gana Yantrika Systems Pvt Ltd is a privately held company which invests in companies with unique business models and uses technology to advance market access.

Zenify currently manages 1500 crore worth of properties in Bangalore. In the next three years, they're planning to expand to all Tier 1 cities across the country.

The closest competitor of Zenify in India is NestAway which also manage rental poperties however, unlike Zenify, it is more of managing shared accomodation/rental properties and at Nestaway everything happens online - from showing the house to approving tenants, completing agreements to collecting rent. Nestaway is backed by Tiger Global and Flipkart.

Innovative Startups In India Starving For VC Funding

innovative_startups_lacks_funding

Every now and then, we come across news of some startup or another receiving this much or that much of million dollars worth venture capital and this makes us believe that everything is hunky dory in the Indian startup world. But, unfortunately this is not the case.

While it's true that consumer Internet companies are coughing up billions of dollars from venture capital firms, there are some startups on the other hand that have been looking for investment for years now and have come down to the extent of shifting base from the country in order to survive. These startup mostly belong to the innovation driven technology genre.

The state of innovation driven technology startups in the domestic start-up ecosystem can be assessed from India’s steadily slipping rank in the list of global innovation hubs. According to a 2014 survey jointly published by Cornell University, Insead and the World Intellectual Property Organisation, India currently ranks 76th as against 66th rank in the year before.

The main reason for Venture Capitalists decreasing activity in the innovation driven technology startups is, that they typically favour firms that have an addressable market of Rs.1,000-5000 crore and the potential to capture at least 10-15% of the market in about next five years. Unfortunately, this is not the case with most of these innovation based startups in their beginning years.

The current trend in the Indian startup ecosystem involves investors funding in copy-paste start-ups. For example, the hyperlocal food, grocery and on-demand services start-ups have been able to raise at least $100 million in the period of last eight months. According to various industry experts, this is a transitional period and happens everywhere. The country is currently in that interim period where it is a little muted for innovation-led entrepreneurship.

Absence of many previous cases of such innovation based start-ups making it big in a big enough local market also acts as a major hindrance for the investors.

Seeing the issue and potential that the startup ecosystem have in boosting the economy of the country, the Indian government is also taking steps to ensure the availability of funds for small startups. What could be seen as a step in this direction, the government just announced a fund by Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) last week.

Currently available at Google playstore, the App has been downloaded by 1000+ users and is known for its Laundry services by many working professionals and students.

Tooler is currently in talks with several investors regarding funding. Their future plans include extending its services to more categories like Bakery, Water and Appliance Repairs. It also plans to expand to other cities in days to come.

Tooler faces competition with Housejoy, Qyk, LocalOye and Zimmber, among others. Housejoy had raised $4 million in June this year while Bengaluru-based Qyk has secured $1 million last month in seed funding. Mumbai-based Zimmber on other hand has so far raised $2.4 million in two separate rounds.

The online home services startup is estimated tobe around USD 100 billion in size.
