nasscom smartcity MoU

India’s National Association of Software and Services (NASSCOM) and SmartCity, the IT special Economic Zone of Malta have come together for the development and growth industry and have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding the same.

The MoU which was signed at the Ministry of Economy, Investment and Small Business at Palazzo Zondadori in the Maltese capital of Valletta on 16th July aims at contributing to the development and growth of the knowledge industry with special emphasis on e-commerce, software, IT enabled services, Smart services, IT services, Cloud Computing and Telecommunications.

According to SmartCity, this MoU will lead to the creation of self-sustaining models which will enable the rapid development and growth of the sector, propelled by innovative technologies. It also added that their partnership with NASSCOM will focus on building knowledge cluster models globally as a network of self-sustained knowledge townships and support growth of these industries.

R Chandrasekaran, NASSCOM’s Chairman and State Minister for Economy, Investment and Small Business, Christian Cardona were duly present for the signing of the MoU. SmartCity Malta CEO Anthony P. Tabone, SmartCity Dubai CEO Abdullatif AlMulla and Chief strategy officer of SmartCity Dubai Dr. Baju George were also present during the event.

According to NASSCOM Chairman, this partnership with SmartCity will ensure faster adaptability of advanced technologies and develop knowledge hubs globally. It will also provide access to companies functioning in India to better facilities, infrastructure and services and enable growth of the global network of free zone business townships.

The MoU has an aim of developing some eight more townships in the period of next ten years with smart digital infrastructure, apart from the existing projects in Kochi (India) and Malta (Europe).

According to SmartCity Dubai CEO Abdullatif AlMulla, emerging technologies like analytics, cloud, pervasive presence of mobile telephony and broadband penetration have resulted in the creation of new and better opportunities for companies to collaborate and build a knowledge hub globally.

He also welcomed the EU Parliament’s decision to favor EU-wide, ICT visas, which would allow the employees of NASSCOM’s member companies to move freely between EU and states.  This was a result of NASSCOM’s six year long hardwork to convince the EU Parliament in doing so.
