1) Teenager from Arunachal Develops Goggles For Blind, Using Parking Sensor Technology

A class XI student of New Galaxy Academy, Nirjuli is currently the talk of the town in Arunachal Pradesh. The student, Anang Tadar has successfully built a very innovative gadget for blind people called Goggle for Blind (G4B).

Moving around is one of the most difficult daily tasks that blind people have to encounter. If Tadar’s invention is mass produced, it has the capability of making this task much easier than it is currently. G4B are basically a pair of glasses that can be worn by the visually impaired people when they’re walking and the goggle’s technology, which is similar to parking sensors in cars, will alert them about the nearby objects, without making use of a stick.

2) Newly Launched ‘Human’ Chatbot Can Read Human Emotions & Expressions

A New Zealand-based startup called Soul Machines has successfully built a virtual chatbot that can not only portray human emotions, but also read their facial expressions. According to the startup, their main aim behind creating Nadia, the chatbot, was to take the chatbot service to a whole new level by humanising the interaction between the man and the machine, and make them more like humans.

Soul Machines has termed Nadia’s capability of reading human facial expressions as its ’emotional intelligence’ or EI. The chatbot sees users through webcams and gets a better sense of their emotions, which helps it in making a connect with them on a more subtle emotional level. The startup claims, just like Artificial Intelligence, even EI can learn through its experience. This means, the more the chatbot interacts with people, the better it gets at reading human emotions.

3) Amid Electric Cars, This US Startup’s Electric Plane To Carry 150 Passengers

While Indians are still working on making electric cars on roads a mass reality, a US-based startup named Wright Electric has started working on an electric-powered plane called Wright One that will be capable of taking a commercial flight in the next 10 years. According to Wright Electric, their aim is to make every short flight electric within the period of next 20 years.

Wright Electric’s electric-powered plane is intended to go head to head with the smaller planes from the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families. In order to make this 150-seat passenger aircraft a reality, the startup is currently on a lookout for investors. The electric-plane will be capable of flying 300 miles.

4) The Internet of Things (IoT) Will Now Save the World’s Water

On the occasion of World Water Day this week, tech giant IBM entered into a pact with Ireland’s Dublin City University for a collaborative R&D pilot to leverage the in trend internet of things (IoT) technology to help protect water, which is currently the most precious natural resource on planet Earth.
The collaboration will see IBM joining the University’s Water Institute Industry Advisory Council and bringing together its cognitive IoT-based environmental solutions with Dublin City University’s much-inspired Water Institute expertise and leadership in environmental sensing via the university’s National Centre for Sensor Research.

5) IIT Kharagpur Develops India’s First Superpower Drone

After the Indian government recently launched the BHIM app that allows payments via the United Payments Interface, a group of talented researchers at IIT Kharagpur have now designed the country’s first indigenous superpower drone by the same name.

Though just a metre long in length, the things that make BHIM standout from the rest of the drones is its unique state-of-the-art protection shield, superior imagery and hitherto unknown abilities. The name BHIM has been derived from Mahabharata’s epic warrior and second Pandava, Bhima.

The drone has been conceived and designed especially for emergency situations. It is capable of maintaining long flight times and drop emergency supplies like food etc. by parachutes. It can also be put to a great use in rescue operations in hard-to-access, remote areas. It also has the ability of conducting integrity checks for boundary walls and find out if there are any breaches.

6) A Newly Developed WiFi System Can Provide 100 Times Faster Internet

Scientists at the Eindhoven University of Technology in Netherlands have successfully developed a new wireless internet based on harmless infrared rays that is 100 times faster than any existing WiFi network and has the capacity to support more devices without getting congested.

The newly developed WiFi network not only has a huge capacity of more than 40 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s), but there is also no need for the users to share since every device gets its own ray of light.

7) India Gets Asia’s first Virtual Reality (VR) Lounge in Noida

PVR Cinemas in association with HP India has launched Asia’s first Virtual Reality (VR) Lounge at PVR ECX, Mall of India, Noida. Movie goers can enjoy a mix of movie trailers, games and other interactive content like action sports and drama at four such VR Docks or Pods, equipped with technology by HP, located at the theatre.

This partnership between the parties will see the roll out of 10 such virtual reality lounges across PVRs in India, with three each in Delhi and Bengaluru. From crouching behind turrets to diving on the ground to avoid strafing bullets to seeing a grotesque image lurking nearby, those few intense minutes will surely keep movie lovers fastened to the HP VR Lounge. The HP VR Lounge also provides a whole new library of fascinating and adventurous immersive and interactive content curated from various different genres like drama, fiction, sci-fi, horror, action etc.

8) Hyperloop Transportation Begins Passenger Capsule Construction for Delivery in Early 2018

Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) has begun constructing the world’s first full scale Passenger Hyperloop Capsule. The capsule, which is being built in collaboration with Carbures S.A. (MaB: CAR), is the result of over three years and thousands of hours of research, design, analysis and hard work.

The official reveal of the capsule will happen somewhere in early 2018 at HTT’s R&D center in Toulouse, France for integration and optimization. The capsule will then be utilized in a commercial system soon to be announced from the ongoing negotiations and feasibility studies currently taking place around the world.

9) Google Relaunched Its Product of 2009 and No One Noticed

The week saw tech giant Google announcing a new real—time location sharing feature of Google Maps available for both Android and iOS users. Google Maps users will now be able to share their real-time location with anyone and the people they share with will be able to see the location on Android, iPhone, mobile web and desktop.

Back in 2009, when smartphones were still a new concept, Google had announced something similar called Latitude. But because of privacy concerns raised by many, Google decided to shut down Latitude and discontinued it on August 9, 2013.

10) Uber Suspends Self-driving Cars After Arizona Crash

Uber has decided to withdraw its self-driving cars from the US roads after an accident on Arizona street left one of the vehicles on its side. A picture floating on the web shows a Volvo SUV, which was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, next to another badly damaged vehicle.

According to a spokeswoman for the police in Tempe, Arizona, the accident occurred when another vehicle "failed to yield" to the Uber car at a left turn. Following the incident, Uber has withdrawn its self-driving vehicles off the road in Arizona at first, followed by test sites in Pennsylvania and California - all three states where it operated the vehicles.
